Hi, I’m Dr. Jacob Hendendrickson and I’m
0:02
going to explain to you um how you end
0:05
up getting disc bulging and disc
0:07
herniations and then eventually how that
0:09
turns into disc degenerative disc
0:12
disease or degenerative joint disease
0:14
cuz it’s a very similar concept. Now,
0:16
because we stand, we’re standing
0:18
creatures and the spine is in a vertical
0:20
position. Gravity pulls down on us. We
0:22
call this axial compression. And as you
0:24
get older over time, if you’re not
0:26
cognizant of your spinal posture or take
0:30
care of yourself, your spine can start
0:32
to get compressed to the point where you
0:34
start to squish down and lose posture.
0:36
And you see these elderly people like
0:37
that. Now, when that happens, because of
0:40
the compressive forces on the spine,
0:43
things gets get literally squished. So,
0:45
this is a vertebrae, two vertebrae and a
0:47
disc. Here’s your spinal cord and your
0:50
nerves. Boom. When gravity pulls us
0:53
down, squishes us, squish, squish,
0:55
squish. Just like that, the disc gets
0:57
smaller and smaller and smaller to the
0:58
point where it does what? It’ll
1:00
eventually bulge or herniate.
1:03
When we see that here, compression,
1:06
compression, compression, compression,
1:08
extruded disc, bulging disc. Here’s the
1:11
disc from a top down view putting
1:13
pressure onto the nerve. Here’s a side
1:15
view right here. compression disc
1:19
bulges, herniates out, puts pressure on
1:21
your nerve. Now, that’s what ends up
1:23
happening because things get compressed
1:25
over time. And in a prior video, I
1:27
explained how this compressive forces uh
1:29
can happen. Now, as that continues to
1:32
happen, imagine a sponge that’s filled
1:33
with water. And if you took that sponge
1:35
and you just kept compressing it like
1:36
this over time, what happens? The sponge
1:39
starts to dry out at an accelerated
1:41
rate. And as you keep pressing it down
1:43
and the water keeps coming out and the
1:45
sponge continues to dry and dry and dry
1:46
and dry. Well, the compression all the
1:49
way down like this, the sponge dries and
1:50
then it dries in this compressed
1:53
position. It looks like a pancake. It’s
1:54
all dry and crusty. It it doesn’t work
1:57
anymore. And that’s that’s what ends up
1:59
happening to the vertebrae and the
2:02
discs. They continue to get compressed.
2:04
They start to get arthritis because the
2:05
fluid, the lubrication in the area is
2:08
literally being pressed out of it,
2:09
right? and the rest of the body is
2:10
absorbing it. And it gets to this point
2:13
where you have this advanced arthritis
2:15
or degenerative disc disease. You still
2:18
have bulging because what’s left of the
2:19
disc is putting pressure on the nerve.
2:21
As you can see, the nerves are all small
2:23
and dried out as well because now
2:24
they’re being compressed. So, what ends
2:27
up happening, how we get these disc
2:29
bulges and herniations is due to again
2:31
spinal compressive forces
2:34
and uh vertebrae that aren’t functioning
2:36
properly. They’re not moving properly.
2:38
And this squishes us down, dries
2:40
everything out, and then we start to get
2:42
this advanced degeneration. The same
2:44
concept can happen in any joint, in your
2:47
shoulder, in your hip, in your knee, in
2:50
your ankle. These compressive forces
2:52
start to get degenerative joint disease
2:54
cuz we lose what? We start to lose space
2:57
in the joint. So, as chiropractors, our
3:00
job is to decompress your joints, open
3:04
everything up so we get more space, and
3:06
then also move the joints. So they start
3:08
to function better, taking away the pain
3:11
and preventing long-term degenerative
3:13
changes.
