Why Flexibility Declines With Age and How to Improve It

Episode Notes:

In this episode of the Crystal Grove Chiropractic podcast, Dr. Jacob Henricksen tackles one of the most common concerns he hears in his Lutz, Florida practice: why our bodies seem to get stiffer as we age.

Dr. Henricksen breaks down the real science behind declining flexibility, separating fact from the common assumption that stiffness is simply an unavoidable part of getting older.

Whether you’re noticing tightness creeping into your daily life or want to stay ahead of age-related mobility loss, this episode gives you practical, actionable steps to improve and maintain your flexibility at any age.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m doctor Henricksen, and you’re listening to the Crystal Grove Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Lutz, Florida. Today we’re talking about something I hear about in my office almost every single day — and that’s flexibility. Specifically, why it gets harder to move the older we get, and what you can actually do about it.

Now here’s the thing. A lot of people assume that stiffness is just… inevitable. Like it’s a package deal with getting older. And I want to push back on that a little, because while some changes do happen naturally in the body over time, a lot of what we experience as stiffness is something we actually have a lot of influence over. And that’s good news.

So let me break this down for you. As we age, a few things start to shift in the body. First, our joints naturally lose some of their fluid. Think of your joints like hinges — they need lubrication to move smoothly. When that fluid decreases, movement can feel stiffer and less comfortable. This is a normal part of aging, but it doesn’t mean you’re stuck.

The second thing is that our muscles tend to shorten and tighten over time — especially when we’re not moving them through their full range of motion regularly. And honestly, for a lot of people in Lutz and across the country, we’re sitting more than ever. At desks, in cars, on the couch. All that sitting trains your body to stay in a shortened, compressed position. And over time, that becomes your new normal. Your body adapts to what you do most.

Here’s what’s interesting — the nervous system plays a big role in this too. Your brain is constantly monitoring your joints and muscles, and if it senses instability or unfamiliar ranges of motion, it actually tightens things down as a protective response. So sometimes what feels like a flexibility problem is really your nervous system doing its job — just a little too aggressively.

Now let’s talk about what you can actually do. The number one thing I tell patients is — move daily. It doesn’t have to be intense. Gentle, consistent movement is what keeps your joints happy. Something as simple as a ten minute walk in the morning, followed by some easy stretching, can make a real difference over time.

When it comes to stretching, slow and steady wins the race. Hold each stretch for about twenty to thirty seconds. Don’t bounce. Don’t force it. Just breathe into it and let the body relax into the movement. Focus on the areas that feel the tightest — usually the hips, the hamstrings, and the upper back are the big ones I see people struggling with.

And here’s a practical tip — try to move your joints through their full range of motion every day. Roll your shoulders back. Do some gentle neck rotations. Take your hips through slow circles. These aren’t fancy exercises. They’re just reminders to your body that those ranges of motion still exist and still work.

Staying hydrated matters too. Your joints and the structures around them need water to function well. It sounds simple, but a lot of people are walking around mildly dehydrated, and it shows up in how they feel and how they move.

Now, when should you come see a chiropractor about flexibility? I’d say — if your stiffness is getting in the way of daily life, if you’re waking up feeling locked up every morning, or if you’re noticing that certain movements have become painful or impossible — that’s a great time to come in and get evaluated. Sometimes there’s an underlying joint restriction or a spinal alignment issue that’s contributing to the problem, and that’s exactly what we’re here to help with.

At Crystal Grove Chiropractic, we take a thorough look at how your spine and joints are moving, and we put together a plan that’s specific to you. Not a one-size-fits-all approach — a plan built around your body and your goals.

Flexibility isn’t just about doing the splits or touching your toes. It’s about being able to live your life — bending down to play with your grandkids, reaching overhead without wincing, getting out of bed in the morning and feeling ready to go.

That’s what we care about here. Thank you so much for tuning in today. If you have questions, or if you’re ready to come in and see what we can do for you, give us a call or visit our website.
