In this episode, Dr. Jacob Henricksen of Crystal Grove Chiropractic in Lutz, Florida dives into one of the most overlooked health issues of our time: posture. With the average person spending hours each day hunched over phones, tablets, and computers, the strain on our spines has never been greater.
Dr. Henricksen breaks down why good posture is about far more than just sitting up straight — it affects everything from your energy levels and breathing to long-term spinal health. He shares practical insights into what poor posture is actually doing to your body and why the problem is getting worse with every passing year.
Whether you’ve been dealing with neck pain, back stiffness, or just a nagging feeling that something’s off, this episode will give you a clearer picture of what’s happening and what you can do about it.
Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Henricksen with Crystal Grove Chiropractic here in Loots, Florida — and today I want to talk about something that affects just about every single person listening to this right now. Posture. Specifically, why it matters more than ever in a world where we are all glued to screens for hours and hours every single day.
Now, I know what some of you might be thinking. Posture? That sounds like something my grandmother used to lecture me about. Sit up straight, stop slouching. And sure, there’s something to that. But here’s the thing — what we’re dealing with today goes way beyond just slouching at the dinner table. We are spending more time on phones, tablets, laptops, and computers than any generation before us. And our bodies are feeling it.
Let me break this down for you. When you’re standing tall, your head is balanced right over your shoulders. It weighs somewhere around ten to twelve pounds. That’s a lot of weight to carry around. But when you tilt your head forward — like most of us do when we’re looking at a phone or a screen — the amount of stress on your spine increases dramatically. Even just a few inches of forward tilt can put significantly more load on the muscles and joints of your neck and upper back. Your spine wasn’t designed to handle that kind of demand for eight, ten, twelve hours a day.
Over time, that repeated stress starts to change things. The natural curves of your spine can shift. The joints in your neck and upper back can get stiff and irritated. You might start noticing headaches at the base of your skull, tension across your shoulders, that nagging ache between your shoulder blades — or even numbness and tingling down into your arms. And here’s what’s interesting… a lot of people don’t connect those symptoms to their posture at all. They think it’s just stress, or they slept wrong, or it’ll just go away on its own. Sometimes it does. But often, it keeps building.
So what can you do about it starting today? A few simple things. First — raise your screens. Your monitor should be at eye level so your head isn’t constantly dipping forward. If you’re on your phone a lot, try bringing the phone up to you instead of bringing your chin down to the phone. Second — take breaks. Every thirty minutes or so, stand up, roll your shoulders back, and reset. Set a timer if you need to. Your body loves movement, and it was designed to move throughout the day. Third — pay attention to how you’re sitting. Try to keep your feet flat on the floor, your back supported, and your ears stacked over your shoulders. It doesn’t have to be perfect all the time. Just building that awareness makes a real difference.
Now, here’s when I’d encourage you to come in and get evaluated. If you’re already dealing with neck pain, upper back tension, frequent headaches, or that forward-head posture where your chin is always jutting out — those are signs that your spine may already be under some stress that goes beyond what stretching alone can fix. Chiropractic care is really well suited for this. We look at how your spine is moving, where the joints are restricted, and we work to restore better alignment and motion. A lot of people are genuinely surprised by how much better they feel when their spine is moving the way it should.
You don’t have to be in severe pain to benefit from a checkup. Think of it like going to the dentist — you don’t wait until your teeth are falling out. Same idea here. Getting ahead of posture problems is a whole lot easier than dealing with them after years of buildup.
